The first set of buildings are centered around MCV at 12th and East Marshall Streets.

The board of visitors gave final approval for the demolition of the art deco A.D. Williams Building, which will be replaced by the 12-story School of Medicine at the corner of 12th and E. Marshall streets. Interior demolition and asbestos abatement will begin next month, with the site expected to be cleared by October.

Moreover, VCU received approval to build a new dorm and parking facility in the heart of the main campus.

The new 459-bed residence hall and 218-space parking deck will be built on Grace Street property already cleared of structures and now used for parking. The two projects, expected to open in fall 2012, together will cost about $41 million and be financed using university funds.

The facilities will be built on the south side of West Grace between Laurel and Shafer streets. Only a small restaurant will remain between the residence hall and the deck.

Virginia Commonwealth University plans to build two parking decks on West Grace Street just east of Belvidere Street.

The five-level decks with a total of 750 parking spaces are expected to be completed by the summer of 2011 at a cost of $15 million, said Brian J. Ohlinger, associate vice president for facilities management.

We’re excited by this development, as it will put our Grace and Monroe apartments effectively on campus, with these new parking decks bordering our property to the north and the new Schools of Business and Engineering just two blocks south.

Caressa Cameron, a broadcast journalism student at Virginia Commonwealth University, now plans a second year away from college as she travels extensively to raise money for charity and carry the 89-year-old pageant’s crown.

“I hope to gain inspiration, I hope to gain momentum so that when this 365 days is over, I can shoot through the moon,” Cameron told The Associated Press.
